Bookcover Design: Typography

For my typography course, our final project was to design a hardcover and paperback cover for a book. We were also required to design layouts for the chapters of the books as well. I chose to design covers for A Woman in White by Wilkie Collins. For the hardcover, I was inspired by older hardcover books with ornate covers. I chose a typeface that seemed appropriate for my the style I was going for, and created embellishments to give the cover more personality. Since older style lettering in books typically used Roman Numerals and a serif typeface, I created the chapter layout for the hardcover book inspired by those designs.

I took a more modern approach for the paperback cover. I was inspired by modern mystery books, and created a white silhouette of a woman to draw a viewers attention to the cover. For the layout, sticking with a modern design, I used a Sans Serif for the typeface and used Arabic numerals for the chapter titles. Lastly, since the book was written in the Victorian Era, I associated dark colors with the period and chose a navy color for the hard cover book, and a deep purple for the paperback book.
